~ What Is Emotional Intelligence? ~
There are several working definitions of
emotional intelligence, some of which are quoted below.
Essentially it is a set of non-cognitive abilities that allow us to
determine and create for ourselves meaningful and successful
relationships, careers, and lifestyles. Often referred to as
"common sense" or "street smarts", it is the difference between
knowing what is right and actually behaving in ways that are
supportive, kind, productive and positive. Here are how some of
the "experts" identify emotional intelligence:
"Emotional Intelligence involves the
capacity to perceive emotions, assimilate emotion-related feelings,
understand the information of those emotions, and manage them."
-John Mayer, David Caruso, Peter Salovey
“Emotional Intelligence is an array of non-cognitive capabilities,
competencies, and skills that influence one’s ability to succeed in
coping with environmental demands and pressures.” - Reuven BarOn
“Emotional Intelligence is using feeling to create optimal results
in your relationships with yourself and others.” – 6 Seconds
"Emotional intelligence is about using
the intelligence of emotions as a source of information, motivation
and connection." - Kate Cannon, M.Ed.
"Emotional intelligence is the capacity for recognizing our own
feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for
managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships."
- Daniel Goleman
Our emotions are part of everything we do, of every interaction we have,
and of every decision we make, whether we
are aware of it or not. In the past we have often been
encouraged to ignore our emotions in favor of objective rational
thought, but in reality we are far more effective when we can harness
the power of both our emotions and our intellect. Because of
this the potential impact of emotional intelligence on our lives and
in business is enormous.
